Validity and use
Vignette obligation
In Bulgaria, vignettes are compulsory for all motor vehicles (except motorcycles) on all national roads. The previous paper vignette has been replaced by an electronic vignette since 01.01.2019. The advantage of the new technology is that the e-vignette can be purchased online and is immediately valid, if required.
The e-vignette with the name ‘BGTOLL’ can therefore be purchased exclusively via internet and at designated stations. There is no need to ship the vignette and stick it to the windscreen. All necessary vignette data, such as validity period (i.e. daily, weekly or one-year vignette) and vehicle data, are stored centrally by the toll operator and are immediately available to the authorities for control purposes. The fee for the vignette respectively the fee for the vehicle category is determined in accordance with the official entry in the vehicle registration document.
Cars up to 3.5t require an additional vignette for the trailer, if the sum of the maximum total weight of the vehicle and the trailer exceeds 3.5t. Motorhomes over 3.5t have to pay route-dependent tolls and are charged according to the Euro emission class.
Enforcement in case of unauthorised road usage
The Toll Operator has published a list of all toll roads under the following link: Toll Road System. Driving on toll roads in Bulgaria like highways and motorways without a road use permit or without a valid permit is considered as unauthorised road usage. Drivers driving on a road section without a valid road usage permit risk a fine, a so-called “compensatory fee”. The vignette control is carried out in Bulgaria by approx. 300 stationary surveillance cameras and over 100 additional mobile control vehicles. The road-user authorisation is invalid if:
No motorway vignette was purchased.
The category of the purchased vignette is lower than required by the vehicle.
A required vignette for the trailer was not purchased.
The license plate of the vehicle does not match the license plate which was entered during the order of the e-vignette.
The validity of the e-vignette has not yet begun or has already expired.
